April 29, 2006 West Oak Middle School Courtyard Renovation Project

"Mr. Guzan rendered a formal design for the courtyard. The design incorporated the water features, a butterfly garden, a hummingbird garden, a wetland garden, a rain garden, bio-retention areas, container gardens, decorative fence, landscape lighting, seating, walkways and a unique double pergola, to be used for outside teaching. All the while taking into account; Emergency Services access, people flow, plant layering, seasonality, color coordination, recycling, maintenance functions, storage, animals access, and sight lines from the classrooms surrounding the courtyard. All the plant materials used in the design were Illinois Native Species, with a number of Illinois Native Endangered species included. This is the only location in the United States which has successfully hatched endangered Blanding Turtles."
